So what Yoga do you teach???

This is a question I am often asked by students.  The best way to describe it is that all Yoga which includes movement or asana is Hatha Yoga. The majority of my classes are Hatha Yoga, each class has elements of Movement, Breath, Meditation and Relaxation within it, depending upon what theme we are working with at that time. There are various schools or Methods of Yoga, the primary ones are:
  • Iyengar - precise alignment within the Asana practice, developed by BKS Iyengar
  • Ashtanga - a fast flowing Yoga, not recommended in my opinion for beginners or  injuries/conditions.
  • Jivamukti Yoga - Again a strong practice, but includes spiritual chanting and Ahimsa/Non-violence to Animals is paramount.
  • Yin Yoga - Long held poses to teach stillness and work with connective tissue and ligaments, again wouldn't necessarily recommend to a complete beginner.
  • Hot Yoga/Bikram - Usually certain postures are given and you work under intense heat lamps.
  • Restorative - held poses using props to support the body, used to aid relaxation
  • Others include, Sivananda, Scaravelli, Kundalini and the more outlandish Goat or Puppy Yoga etc..
  • My advice is to ask the teacher what style they are teaching and be sure that you ask about there background training not all trainings are as intensive of the British Wheel of Yoga or Yoga Alliance courses. Above all though enjoy your practice you should not feel like you are being judged but nurtured to work with your own unique and fabulous body. Om Shantih - Peace to All
